facebook-defends-people-you-may-know-gps-allegations-but-theres-moreWe have all been on Facebook and had a really good and useful friend suggestion for instance 3 or 4 of your friends know somebody the likelihood is that you know them.

However have you noticed suggestions recently where you have 1 or maybe no friends in common, that is because Facebook is now making suggestions based upon Geo Location. Yep thats right the creepy guy who winks at you everyday on the bus could be coming to friend request you soon!

How is this possible?  Very simply you both have location settings turned on on your phone, and while you have not ‘checked in’ on the bus or train, Facebook still knows where your device is, and it also knows where he is.

So you see Facebook isn’t just suggesting friends based upon who you know, it also considers where you go and who you interact.  Now not to scaremonger or anything but what happens when someone just happens to walk past a school gate at the same time every lunch time?  Are your kids GPS settings turned on or turned off?

According to sources “People You May Know are people on Facebook that you might know,” a Facebook spokesperson said.

“We show you people based on mutual friends, work and education information, networks you’re part of, contacts you’ve imported and many other factors.”

The spokesperson confirmed that location services are a factor but are combined with other information.
